The Mt Gilead mosaic is one of several art installations that have been installed along the retreat center’s “inspiration trail.” “Community” was the theme of this project. While we facilitated the project, the preparation, concept, design and installation was entirely done by volunteers over a number weekend workdays. The material we used were river rocks, fossils and geodes collected from the streams that flow through the Friends Retreat. At the center of the mosaic we decided to work together simultaneously as a community. We then each worked on individual mosaic insets around the centerpiece to give light to the individual element in community. The final product was one that fits beautifully in the natural landscape. Up close, it is striking to the eyes, but at a distance, it almost vanishes into its surroundings.
