History and Reproduction
January 2, 2015

This mosaic was created during a workshop at the Chicago Mosaic School that covered ancient mosaic history and conservation work.  The method for reproduction used here is the “Ravenna Technique.” Working on a clay slab, the cartoon is transferred to the clay and then the pieces can be set temporarily on the clay. Cloth mesh is then affixed to the surface of the mosaic using rabbit skin glue and the mosaic is removed from the clay slab.  The mosaic can then be reinstalled to a substrate. This mosaic is a segment from Rimini Piazza Ferrari in the 2-3rd century.
