This colorful sign was created for the Shalom Community Center, a day shelter and resource center in Bloomington, IN. It is a great organization to support. Be sure to check out their work at shalomcommunitycenter.org.
The original idea for the design was inspired by Chattanooga-based artist Terry Cannon, who designs mosaic like art pieces and has done several vibrant thrift mosaics in Chattanooga. Shalom in the Hebrew sense of the word evokes a feeling of contentment, completeness, wholeness, well being and harmony. We wanted to convey this by the use of playful figures and bright colors. The border pieces were handmade by a ceramic studio in Tennessee and the ceramic figures were acquired from antique and thrift stores in Bloomington to add interest and whimsy. Troy Smith spent many hours setting pieces and grouting the finished piece.
