We created this custom mosaic through a delightful collaboration. In the design process, the idea of a monstrance-influenced piece came about to complement the communion host mosaic already installed in their backsplash. The Shakespeares wanted to incorporate materials from their newly renovated kitchen – red glass and charcoal and ivory porcelain were balanced by layers of gold smalti, slate, mirror, iridescent glass gems, and bicycle spokes. The materials are framed by a reclaimed iron cistern cover. Emily created the mosaic from Chris’ design and used different techniques including layering glass, using a hammer and hardie, and a ring saw to shape the various materials. Once complete, Chris noticed a similarity to the Higgs Boson or “God” Particle, and the mosaic found its name.
