Monoculture is composed of Mexican smalti and copper wire and is an interpretation of a close up landscape photograph Chris took years ago during late summer. There is an immense amount of detail in the mass of corn and stalks that would be difficult to realize in a mosaic. Chris decided on electrical wire as the perfect material to form the stalks and set movement to the piece. The aesthetic is definitely interpretive (not realistic). Chris wanted the piece to draw the attention of the viewer and be pleasing to the eye without forcing an obvious impression. Monoculture is a reflection on the ever increasing “monocultures” we are living in – economic and social as well as the agricultural.
