This project was a collaboration with Gustavo Meza.  We wanted to install a representational piece in the Catholic Worker house we were renovating.  We chose radishes as they share the same root word as the word radical, a word that often gets a bad rap today.  Radicals are those crazy people that we’d rather avoid altogether; or more seriously, they are those people we say we are fighting in our wars.  But the root word that these share means just that, “root.”  True radicals are those who are getting back to the root of things, in our case, trying to find a simpler, more sustainable and meaningful life rooted in Jesus.  The design and coloration was Chris’.  Emily set the border, part of the background, and finished the piece with grout.  Gustavo Meza methodically set the overwhelming majority of the piece.
